In the data industry, we often focus on mastering the latest tools and techniques—whether it’s Python, advanced algorithms, or utilizing cutting-edge platforms like machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). But there’s something even more powerful: critical thinking.

At Data Quality and Optimization (Dataqao), a consulting firm based in Chicago, we recently faced a challenging project that underscored this truth. Our task was to help an international construction company sell a large quantity of de-icing salt in the U.S. market. With limited market experience and difficulties in pricing, we decided to start by asking fundamental questions and understanding both the seller’s and buyer’s needs rather than immediately diving into complex models and algorithms.

The Power of Curiosity and Positive Thinking

By exploring the market and asking the right questions, we discovered a buyer interested in purchasing 1 million tons of salt—much more than our client had anticipated. One significant lesson from this project is that exceeding client expectations can lead to substantial benefits. This approach resulted in a successful outcome for both parties involved.
