Data in action: Insights that drive results.

In the data industry, we often focus on mastering the latest tools and techniques—whether it’s Python, advanced algorithms, or utilizing cutting-edge platforms like machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI). But there’s something even more powerful: critical thinking.

At Data Quality and Optimization (Dataqao), a consulting firm based in Chicago, we recently faced a challenging project that underscored this truth. Our task was to help an international construction company sell a large quantity of de-icing salt in the U.S. market. With limited market experience and difficulties in pricing, we decided to start by asking fundamental questions and understanding both the seller’s and buyer’s needs rather than immediately diving into complex models and algorithms.

The Power of Curiosity and Positive Thinking

Curiosity and positive thinking proved to be crucial in our approach. By exploring the market and asking the right questions, we discovered a buyer interested in purchasing 1 million tons of salt—much more than our client had anticipated. This success wasn’t due to advanced data models or sophisticated AI techniques but because we applied a mindset of curiosity and positivity, going beyond the basics to deliver greater value.

Giving More Than Expected

One significant lesson from this project is that exceeding client expectations can lead to substantial benefits. By offering deeper insights and more value than initially required, we not only addressed the client's needs but also created additional opportunities. This approach resulted in a successful outcome for both parties involved.

The Lesson for Data Professionals

The key takeaway is that while ML, AI, and other tools are essential, it’s the blend of curiosity, positive thinking, and a commitment to going above and beyond that truly distinguishes exceptional data scientists. By embracing a mindset of curiosity and positivity, you can unlock insights that tools alone may not reveal.

This is our first time posting an article on the Medium platform, and we hope to provide helpful information that resonates with both data professionals and those interested in data-driven solutions.
